After the decision to demolish, residents of Kungälv were allowed to take stones from the ruin and they gladly did. Today you can see stones from the fortress in the foundation of homes and walls along the eastern and western streets of Kungälv.

In order to preserve its culture, in 1838 King Carl Johan XIV prohibited any further destruction of Bohus Fortress.

Under the leadership of Colonel Claes Grill the work of preservation began at the turn of the century in 1900 and in 1925 the the governmental construction board took over the responsibility of Bohus Fortress. In 1934, during a time of economic crisis, the unemployed helped work on its restoration.

Therefore, among other things, the main gate was built which bears King Gustav V’s name cipher.
